Role Purpose

In this role you will be a key member of the Institutes Learning Service’s team working with academics across the organisation. Under the guidance of the various Associate Directors of Education, with subject matter experts from across to the Institute to develop effective, innovative online learning content that is of the highest quality. The post-holder’s main role is to gain an understanding of the Institutes learning and education strategy and to develop technology support for these activities. Acting as the Institute’s lead on the selection, application and development of technology in respect of learning, research and other commercially viable options or activities the Institute may wish to pursue within the purvey of technology-enhanced learning and to evaluate materials for their suitability for the intended audience and apply their knowledge of pedagogy, heutagogy and andragogy to instructional design, to translate content from Subject Matter Experts into compelling online educational materials.

Role and Responsibilities

  • To work with the Course Design staff and Subject Matter Experts to develop high-quality online learning content, applying instructional design principles and pedagogical good practice to the review and editorial development of subject matter content.
  • To ensure all learning content developed adheres to the editorial style, design and quality specifications that have been defined and complies with relevant Institute and DL policies, such as those defining accessibility, copyright and Intellectual Property standards.
  • To support the Course Design staff in the creation and execution of development plans and schedules for assigned projects, ensuring that key project milestones are met and identifying, resolving or escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Support the DL across the whole institute and lead production teams in the creation of audio-visual materials and interactive learning objects by contributing to the development of briefs for video and digital assets, preparing content for handover to production and reviewing and providing feedback on production outputs.
  • Build and/or upload content to online learning platforms, ensuring all content is presented accurately, logically, and in compliance with agreed templates, specifications and standards for that project.
  • Ensure the quality assurance of online courses by undertaking the editorial and technical review and testing of courses prior to sign-off and delivery.
  • Work within the broad remit of the Institute’s Learning and Teaching Strategy to inform decision-making about strategically positioning technology-enhanced learning across the organisation.
  • Understand the various strategies in regard to teaching and learning, including requirements of programmes and modules, guide use of technology (i.e. facilitate sharing of good practice, run training for colleagues and students) across the Institute based on this knowledge.
  • Across the Institute to promote, develop and evaluate the impact of technology-enhanced learning on the student learning experience. Advise new programme development teams on the pedagogic value of incorporating existing and new technologies.
  • Maintain project documentation during the project lifecycle, attend and contribute to key project meetings, and provide regular updates and reports to the Managers as appropriate.
  • Work with other key staff in RAS e.g. library, welfare and quality staff to ensure that digital learning resources are accessible and simple to understand by students.
  • Design and deliver training to staff and students on all aspects of digital learning, development and accessibility.
  • Ensure that all digital resources are cognisant of the Institute’s values and EDI principles. All staff are expected to operate in line with these values and standards, which work as an integral part of our strategy and set out the principles of how we work together.
  • Provide one-to-one and group support for academics seeking to develop e-learning approaches in teaching and to support research.
  • Design web, multimedia and print support material on aspects of e-learning.
  • Design support for students in using e-learning tools for effective study.
  • Develop and deliver e-learning aspects of the Institute’s central staff development programme (including workshops and seminars) that complement the work of the wider Institute.
  • The post-holder will, from time to time, be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as may reasonably be required by his/her line manager. The post is based in the Institute and there may be occasions when the post-holder’s role and skill set may be required elsewhere or where travel is required, so flexibility will be essential.
  • Support staff and students with accessing e-learning and other digital content. You will also work with colleagues in the Institute to develop a strategic approach to technology-enhanced learning.
  • An eye for detail and excellent editorial skills, with experience of editing and managing educational content projects from first draft through to delivery.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A first degree or equivalent experience.
  • Highly literate with an excellent grasp of English and proven content and editorial skills, ideally in the development of online educational materials.
  • A good understanding of online pedagogy and experience of applying instructional design principles to the editorial development of educational content.
  • Experience of using Virtual Learning Environments or equivalent learning/content management systems to create, manage and deliver online content.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise professionally and confidently with academic subject matter experts other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective organisation and project management skills, including the ability to prioritise effectively and manage multiple projects/tasks and deadlines simultaneously without compromising accuracy.
  • Able to think creatively and work effectively with learning technologists, video producers and other digital production staff to develop engaging educational materials.
  • Ability to systematically review and test online learning materials, identify and investigate content and technical issues, and to resolve or escalate as appropriate.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to proactively identify and address problems quickly and independently.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training modules.
  • A talented and enthusiastic individual to support the editorial development of content for online learning courses to be delivered on a range of platforms, including our Moodle Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
  • An experienced and confident user of Virtual Learning Environments or equivalent online learning platforms and you will be able to work effectively with video producers, animators and learning technologists to create innovative learning experiences and content.
  • Ability and gravitas to lead all training and staff development required to further the institute’s ambition in creating and delivering online content.
  • You will also have excellent communication, organisation and people skills as well as a high degree of self-reliance, collaboration and leadership skills to lead and run institute projects.
  • Experience in designing courses for an online environment.
  • Experience of blended and distance learning in higher education.
  • Experience in using rapid e-learning authoring tools (e.g. Articulate Storyline, Adapt, Adobe Captivate) to create online educational materials.
