Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £45,585 to £54,395 with potential progression once in post to £61,198. Grade: 8

Job Summary

You will contribute to a range of research, teaching and administration. In addition, the appointee will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship, developing and maintaining generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others can carry out theirs.

Teaching will include contributing from the candidate’s expertise to specialist modules, and to core department modules across all programmes as appropriate. This will include making substantial contribution to: (a) the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment (including programme/module review); and (b) enhancement of the student experience and employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff and students, (b) supervising PhD students, and (c) developing and sharing good practice relating to learning and teaching tasks and methods.  

Research will involve initiating, conducting and disseminating original research and candidates should have a research profile commensurate with their career stage. The appointee's research will reflect a growing national and emerging international reputation.

Management and administration is likely to involve contributions at Departmental and School level, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership activities (e.g. working groups) within the University. This may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools' outreach, or similar activities at Department/School level or further within the University.

Main Responsibilities

Person Specification

  • Specialism in Islamic Ethics.
  • Ability to lead on the relationship with our collaboration partner The Al-Mahdi Institute.
  • Attainment of a PhD in Islamic Studies or another relevant subject, which is required prior to the start of appointment.
  • Commitment to contribute to public engagement and developing impactful research.
  • Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels.

Teaching

  • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching, and advising colleagues and students.
  • Experience and success in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience or employability. 

Research

  • Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation in connection with Islamic Ethics, with particular preference on digital ethics, with a focus on the impact of Artificial Intelligence and digital communications on Muslim communities and on Shi’i Legal Theory.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high quality results

Management Administration

  • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes, especially with external partners in Islamic Studies.
  • Ability to support and develop philanthropic relationships.
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
