Job Summary

The Veselkov Lab at Imperial College London seeks an innovative Research Assistant/Associate to join a pioneering research initiative focused on the application of machine learning/AI in cancer research. The successful candidate will work within the Cancer Division of the Surgery and Cancer Department, developing and deploying cutting-edge models to analyse multi-source imaging and omics data, including volatilomics data. This position is crucial for advancing early detection techniques in esophagogastric cancer, supported by the CRUK AROMA programme.

Duties and responsibilities

You will work in a multidisciplinary team composed of clinicians, surgeons, biologists, and computational scientists. You will design and develop a computational strategy based on machine learning to interrogate and interpret complex imaging and omics data sets from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and volatilomics. You will engage with the entire team to discuss problems, potential solutions, and collaborative approaches to move the project forward. You will also contribute to scientific papers, present research findings at conferences, and assist in grant proposal preparations.

Essential requirements

  • You must have an MRes, PhD, or equivalent in cancer informatics or a relevant numerical discipline such as computer science or bioinformatics.
  • Required skills include a strong background in machine learning, particularly in deep learning and reinforcement learning.
  • Experience in analysing omics mass spectrometry data, especially proteomic or metabolomic data, is essential.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and/or Java, along with experience analysing large-scale datasets using advanced machine learning techniques, is also required. Excellent analytical, communication, and writing skills are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

This is a Full Time and fixed term role until 2026, based at the Hammersmith Campus.
