About us

Applications are invited for a Post Doctoral Research Fellow position in the UCL Division of Infection and Immunity in a research team led by Professor Clare Jolly. The post is funded by a Wellcome Investigator Award to Professor Jolly that seeks to understand HIV infection of T cells, focusing on what makes a cell permissive to infection and cellular reprogramming during virus-host interactions. Key goals are to define virus-host interactions and mechanisms by which HIV reprograms T cells to support efficient infection, viral spread and persistence. The group currently comprises an interdisciplinary team of molecular virologists, immunologists, and cell biologists. Applicants with expertise in molecular virology, T cell biology or immunology will be particularly welcomed.

About the role

Specific projects are designed taking into account the interests and experience of the post holder and to make the most exciting discoveries. We are keen to build on our discovery that HIV-1 reprograms CD4 T cells to gain characteristics of tissue-residency (Reuschl et al 2022), and the implications this has for T cell function, HIV-1 reservoir formation and viral persistence. The group currently comprises an interdisciplinary team of molecular virologists, immunologists, and cell biologists. The post-holder will be expected to perform the highest quality research under the direction of the Principal Investigator, and to work effectively with group members and external collaborators.

Funding is initially available until October 2026 with the possibility of extension subject to project outcomes and priorities.

See http://www.ucl.ac.uk/jolly-lab for further background information.

About you

The position will suit a motivated postdoctoral scientist who wishes to develop their career and ultimately pursue opportunities for future independent fellowships. This project intersects virology, immunology, T cell biology and we welcome applicants with a strong background in any or a combination these areas. Applicants with experience of handling large data sets or bioinformatics analysis relevant to the above subject areas are also encouraged. The postholder should have a PhD (or about to be awarded) in a relevant subject.

The successful candidates must have significant experience of working in a research laboratory. Evidence of scientific contribution, for example, publications or presentation at conferences is also essential. Candidates must have excellent oral and written scientific communications skills, commitment to collaboration in research and to taking a multidisciplinary approach to problem solving.

Please see the attached job description and person specification for full details. Please also read the attached Candidate Guidance document.

All applications must include a supporting statement telling us, using examples, how you meet the essential criteria listed in the job description. Applications without a supporting statement will be rejected.
