The Retinal Cell Biology Lab at the University of Southampton seeks to recruit a capable and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for a 3-year project at the intersection of basic and translational research. The successful candidate will join the multidisciplinary Faculty of Medicine’s Vision Group, composed of both basic scientists and clinicians, providing a rich environment for exciting professional and personal development.
The post holder will work on a collaborative project seeking to understand cone photoreceptor physiology taking advantage of human ESC derived retinal organoid cultures.
Candidates should have a PhD (or about to be awarded) in a relevant life sciences area and a BSc/MSc in a related subject (e.g., cell biology, genetics). Knowledge of mammalian cellular and developmental biology is essential. The project will require robust skills in molecular biology techniques, histology, flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Experience in pluripotent stem cell culture, organoid differentiation and the programming language R is desirable.
Furthermore, the candidate must have excellent organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
A successful track-record in research, as evidenced by having published at least one primary research article in the past five years in a peer-reviewed journal, is required. Applicants who do not meet this requirement need not apply.
Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification if the above requirements are met. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title Senior Research Assistant will be given.
