About the role

We’re looking for a flexible team player with experience of reaching varied audiences through user-focused online content.

This job is more aligned to the skills of a sub-editor or content specialist than those of a writer or content creator, although it still requires solid writing skills and the sensibility to think about Sussex from a user’s perspective – from the outside looking in.

You will:

  • take a lead role in making sure complex information is translated so it is easy for people to understand
  • work with varied teams, reacting quickly to respond to new information and update existing content
  • represent the team with senior stakeholders and provide digital guidance
  • passionately advocate for web best practice principles and champion accessibility
  • change the way people think about digital, by articulating the benefits of user-focused content design
  • give ongoing training and support to colleagues at all levels of the organisation, so they can produce their best work and collaborate effectively with others.

You may also need to:

  • supervise junior staff, potentially with line-management responsibility
  • occasionally work out-of-hours, including weekends.

About you

You will have a sound understanding of our audiences, how they find information and how information can differ for them.

You’ll also have experience of writing and editing content that meets the needs of users – in other words, content that helps people achieve the thing they are trying to do, whether that’s requesting an ID card or applying for a course. With your experience, you’ll know how to separate this approach from the internal structures of a big organisation while working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders.

You’re able to prioritise different kinds of work at the same time – such as quick updates and longer-term projects – and solve complex problems directly where possible.
