About the team
The mission of the Careers and Entrepreneurship Team at the University of Sussex is to enable all of our students, whatever their background and circumstances, to develop the skills, experience and connections they need to find their place in the world on graduation.
To achieve this mission, employability (including entrepreneurship) is being embedded into the Sussex curriculum. Students apply their academic knowledge to real-world briefs, develop skills, meet employers and complete career management learning. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activity according to their interests. The diverse extra-curricular menu includes an award-winning work experience offer, a series of employer recruitment and networking events, support to find and secure a year-long placement, one-to-one career coaching, access to a vacancies hub, and an end-to-end entrepreneurship programme. Students can access this support from the time they arrive at the University until three years after they graduate. It is the role of the Careers and Entrepreneurship Team to encourage and enable embedding of employability into the curriculum, and to deliver the extra-curricular programme.
About the role
We are currently seeking a Careers and Employability Consultant to work with our Science and Engineering Faculty. Steered by management information and curriculum frameworks, your role will be to partner with leadership teams and teaching colleagues in the faculty to support embedding. This close partner-working involves a range of activities including: advising on embedding approaches; co-designing and delivering teaching sessions; engaging employers in the curriculum; and project work.
Working with other careers consultants, you will also design and deliver an extra-curricular programme of support to Science and Engineering students to complement in-curricular learning. This will include delivering group workshops, facilitating employer-led events and guiding students one-to-one. To support this activity, you will stay up-to-date with the labour market for graduates.
About you
We are seeking candidates with very strong collaboration skills; the skills to teach and facilitate groups; and the interpersonal skills to guide students on next steps. You will be organised, good at networking, and have highly effective oral and written communication skills for a range of audiences. You will have experience of partnership-working with stakeholders, and knowledge of how to enable group learning through engaging, relevant material and delivery.
We welcome candidates with or without a careers guidance qualification; where needed a qualification will be fully funded.
