Applications are sought for a Technician working in the Teaching Laboratories within the School of Chemistry. The successful candidate will work under the direction of a Senior Technician to support the delivery of practical undergraduate teaching.

The postholder will have excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as a good knowledge of chemistry. They will be a flexible and positive individual who works effectively as part of a team and has the commitment and willingness to learn new skills. The postholder will build working relationships with academic staff to ensure the smooth delivery of undergraduate laboratory sessions.

Key tasks include:

  • Liaise with staff regarding the design and delivery of laboratory classes.
  • Prepare accurate solutions, source and purchase apparatus and research chemicals.
  • Prepare analytical equipment for use in undergraduate laboratory sessions.
  • Replenish chemicals and replace broken glassware.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems that arise during laboratory sessions.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment / infrastructure (e.g. fume cupboards, hotplates etc)
  • Clean the laboratory ensuring equipment is checked and repaired as required.
  • Provide guidance and practical demonstrations of how to perform specialist techniques and use of analytical equipment.

Key skills and attributes required include:

  • HND in Chemistry or related scientific discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment within a UK HE or SE environment.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a small team.
  • High levels of self-motivation and ability to solve problems.
  • Good understanding of H&S practice within a teaching environment.
