This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious and talented application engineers to join the Driving the Electrical Revolution Industrialisation Centre as part of the Power Electronics, Machines and Drives Research Group (PEMC) at the University of Nottingham and become a core member of a team working on electrical machines manufacturing processes, electromagnetic design, magnetic and insulation materials, thermal management, control, construction and testing of high-performance electrical machines.  

The PEMC has undergone a significant period of growth and now has over 200 members, with over 24 academics (including 9 full professors) and approximately 130 PhD students, post-doctoral research fellows and applications engineers. The group has world-class facilities for experimental work including approximately 3500m2 of research space and a construction and testing capability up to 5MW.   

We are recruiting to multiple posts arising from projects with key industrial partners in the field of electrical machines, design, development, manufacturing and testing for which relevant experience is required. This is an innovative and growing area of research, and we are open to applicants who may have alternative transferable skills to contribute to this area. Here are some examples of the type of expertise we are looking for, however this list is not exhaustive and exclusive:  

  • Mechanical design expertise that can be applied to rotating machines. 
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and experience in a manufacturing environment that can be applied to electrical machines.
  • Knowledge of magnetic and insulation materials behaviour modelling or testing.
  • A broad and deep knowledge of test methods for rotating machines and electrical drive systems
  • Knowledge and experience in electromagnetic modelling and design.
  • Knowledge of thermal modelling and analysis methods for oil or air cooled electrical machines.

Candidates should have either a PhD in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or demonstrable equivalent experience. 

The post will be offered on a full-time (36.25 hours per week), fixed term contract for 24 months. Job share arrangements may be considered.  

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
