The role

Are you interested in inspiring diverse groups of people with research, showcasing how research at the University of Bristol is contributing to tackling global challenges? The University of Bristol’s Public Engagement team is looking for an experienced Public Engagement professional to contribute to FUTURES 2024-25: Imagining Tomorrows Together.

This project, led by Bristol in partnership with the universities of Bath, Bath Spa, Exeter and Plymouth, will deliver a regional research festival in September 2024 and 2025, and a Researchers In Schools programme. Over 600 researchers are expected to participate and engage with 130,000 people from a broad range of audiences from across the region.

This is a pivotal role to ensure the smooth running of a programme of UOB-led events involving a number of partners, multiple venues and modes of delivery.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for someone with proven events and public engagement experience to lead the planning, coordination and delivery of the University of Bristol’s activities and to coordinate activities with other consortium members. The role holder will:

  • have responsibility for the design and delivery of a range of interactive face-to-face and online engagement activities in collaboration with world-class heritage and contemporary venues, such as the SS Great Britain
  • ensure events provide opportunities for diverse audiences to be inspired by researchers and show how innovative research affects our daily lives, and that events are delivered on time, safely, and within budget
  • Support researchers by providing training and advice on engagement design, and ensure UOB’s programme is high quality.
  • Contribute to evaluation and record keeping to enable the PI/Project Manager to meet UKRI’s reporting requirements.

You should apply if

  • You have a solid understanding of different approaches and methods of engaging publics with research, and an interest in inspiring diverse publics
  • You have experience delivering public engagement events
  • You are able to advise and train researchers
  • You can work effectively as part of a team, including via MS Teams
  • You can balance working autonomously and taking a consultative approach
  • You can prioritise competing demands and plan effectively
  • You can pay attention to detail and maintain accurate records, including day-to-day budget management

The post will be primarily based in Bristol but occasional travel to the participating cities may be required. You will be required to work outside of normal hours to deliver some events on key dates.

This is a part-time (0.7 FTE) post offered from July 1st 2024 until December 2025, when the funding ends.

These are our ideal requirements, but we know some people are less likely to apply for the role unless they are 100% qualified. The University promotes a supportive and empowering Culture; please apply if you meet the majority of these competencies.
