The Role

As a Teaching Fellow in Disaster and Emergency Management you will undertake teaching and course co-ordination while supporting the development and delivery of undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional programs and other core activities ensuring students have an effective learning experience. 

Based within the College of Engineering, Environment and Science you will work closely with other academic colleagues to enrich the student learning and teaching experience to ensure, as appropriate, relevant aspects of research, enterprise and professional context are embedded in modules and courses.

You will have wide experience in Disaster Management and/or Emergency Planning either as a practitioner or in academic research.

We are particularly interested in applicants with backgrounds in risk and/or crisis management, business continuity, cyber security or Critical National Infrastructure.

The successful applicant should also have a detailed knowledge of key emergency and disaster policy in the UK and internationally. 

Duties include:

Teach on modules and courses at HE levels 4-7 in relevant academic subject areas including curation, adaptation and creation of module teaching materials, delivering a variety of types of students learning sessions and supporting students as appropriate through informal and formal communication throughout teaching semesters.

  • The design, creation, moderation, and quality assurance of appropriate module assessment.
  • Assessment and marking; including coordination of marking teams for large modules, submission, and upload of student marks within stipulated turn round periods and presentation at appropriate meetings and committees as required
  • The preparation and dissemination of both generic and specific formative and summative student feedback, liaising and coordinating with academic support services and student coaches to ensure appropriate support for students.
  • To act as module leaders where required and appropriate including the development of required supporting material.
  • To take on specific course management roles as agreed with School management and course directors.
  • Contribute to quality monitoring, enhancement, and the continuous improvement of the curriculum, teaching, and quality of provision.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or Honours Degree with appropriate professional qualification and/or membership
  • A teaching qualification or acceptance of the requirement to acquire one if not already held
  • PhD or active membership of an appropriate professional body would be advantageous

You will have demonstrable experience of successful teaching at higher education levels 4-7 in Disaster and Emergency Management with high standards of teaching, learning and student engagement consistent with our reputation and track record as a high-quality provider of teaching and learning.

Enthusiastic and self-motivated, you will have experience supporting, enhancing and engaging in an ‘active learning’ pedagogy with evidence in proactively supporting student success.

As a global education provider, experience and awareness of learners cultural differences and expectations with the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds is essential.

Innovation and collaboration are key to our success, therefore the ability to work both independently and part of a wider team with the willingness to engage in flexible ways of working are key skills required for this role.
