Job Summary

This exciting position, funded by Cancer Research and Prostate Cancer UK, combines microfluidic device engineering, membrane protein reconstitution and drug delivery towards the rapid production of next-generation synthetic cells designed to sense the prostate cancer microenvironment. This position will form part of a two-PDRA project team focused on testing the translational potential of such approaches to deliver compounds capable of remodelling prostate cancer tumours for the first time.

The position is aimed at outstanding scientists interested in developing skills in microfluidic device design and production, membrane protein reconstitution, on-chip synthetic cell production and their application to cancer biology and medicine. In this role you will be developing new approaches towards the integration of membrane proteins into lipid-based synthetic cells produced via microfluidics, building on recent advances in vesicle-based tumour sensing by the Membrane Biophysics Group. You will work across a highly multidisciplinary team composed of two research groups (Membrane Biophysics Group (Ces, Hindley) and Androgen Signalling and Prostate Cancer (Bevan)) plus collaborators in Cancer Imaging (Aboagye) and Nanotechnology (Kamaly) aiming to apply innovation in synthetic cell production to develop novel tumour-responsive delivery formulations. Duties and responsibilities

In addition to direct research duties, you will undertake project management, take responsibility for day-to-day supervision of students working on associated projects, submit publications to refereed journals and contribute to attracting external research funding.

Essential requirements 

  • Hold, or be near completion of, a PhD in microfluidics, membrane biophysics, nanomedicine or synthetic cell engineering, or equivalent research or industrial experience
  • Significant practical experience in microfluidic technology development.
  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals
  • Practical experience within a research environment
  • Practical experience in a range of research techniques (see job description for details)
  • Track record in developing scientific work for publication
  • Experience in communicating work to diverse audiences
  • Willingness to work flexibly, undertake necessary training and work as part of a dynamic team. 

Further Information

This is a full time, fixed term position for 36 months. You will be based at White City Campus, and collaborate closely with the Androgen Signalling and Prostate Laboratory led by Professor Charlotte Bevan at the nearby Hammersmith Hospital Campus.

Due to funding constraints for this role, we can offer salary range only at £46,593 - £48,376 per annum. However, you will be eligible for incremental raises as per our standard pay scale for this grade.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant.
