The opportunity:

The Reid School of Music is looking for a tutor with excellent mathematics skills to join a team of practice tutors assisting with tutoring, feedback and assessment during the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year. The Acoustics course sits within an established programme and with specified learning outcomes, as part of the undergraduate and postgraduate Acoustics and Music Technology programmes. As a tutor on Acoustics, you will be delivering the weekly 2 hour tutorial on the fundamental mathematics and physics of acoustic systems, taking students through example problems. The tutorials complement the weekly taught theory lectures.

Relevant learning outcomes for students, which are met by the tutorials, include:

  • Derive equations describing the behaviour of canonical acoustical systems, such as oscillators, strings, membranes, and acoustic tubes.
  • Use boundary and/or initial conditions to solve problems involving the propagation of sound in canonical acoustical systems, including through evaluation of travelling wave solutions and/or impedance-based analysis.
  • Derive expressions for modal shapes, frequencies, and phase and group velocities for sound in canonical acoustical systems.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A Masters degree in a relevant subject area, such as mathematics, physics, or engineering
  • Ability to communicate mathematical principles to a non-mathematical audience
  • Ability to work within a team with a collegial attitude, respect and sensitivity toward students and other staff members
  • An enthusiastic, positive and creative approach to teaching
  • Good communication skills
