We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to join our vibrant and innovative laboratory with world-leading expertise in the biology of oxygen homeostasis here at the Target Discovery Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine. Our group works across the entire spectrum of biomedical science; aiming to use biochemistry and molecular biology to better inform studies into integrated physiology. As a Research Assistant, you will study the cell biology of a novel oxygen sensing and signalling pathway transduced by the N-terminal cysteine dioxygenase, 2-aminoethanethiol dioxygenase (ADO).
You will be responsible for managing your own research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by senior colleagues, as well as contributing to wider project planning, including ideas for new research projects. You will be tasked with determining the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses, and identify suitable alternatives if technical problems arise. You will also be responsible for performing a range of molecular biology assays to analyse protein/mRNA expression and cellular function as well as the general management and administration of the laboratory.
To be successful in this role, you will hold a degree in biomedical science (biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology) along with experience in standard molecular biology techniques such as immunoblotting and RT-qPCR. You will have sufficient knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes. You will also have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 3 years and is funded by the Wellcome Trust.
