Term: Fixed-term appointment at up to 0.4FTE for a term of up to 8 months depending on business need and tasks agreed. 2 days per week in term time required for teaching availability (in person).

The role

Northeastern University London wishes to appoint a Lecturer (teaching only) in Economics. The appointee will contribute to the teaching activities of Northeastern University London in the areas of Economic History and Principles of Microeconomics, and/or possibly other areas depending on expertise and interest. Preference may be given to candidates with active interests in the relationship of Economics to one or more of the following areas: sustainability; diversity and inclusion, interdisciplinarity. Teaching competency in each area to the relevant level is required (see Key Criteria).

Core duties will include teaching on a range of courses and service to the institution. The teaching should be interactive and engaging, rather than traditional lecturing. Ideally, teaching should incorporate elements of experiential learning, and utilise technology to boost student engagement. In addition, the appointee will prepare and mark assessments, hold office hours, and maintain a course Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) site in accordance with University policies and student needs. Attendance at regular team and faculty meetings is desirable, where possible. The role requires availability for teaching on two separate days of the week.

All teaching in this subject area takes place on campus in central London.

Discipline/ Faculty

The appointee will work in a multidisciplinary team within the Faculty of Social Sciences and contribute to the BSc (Hons) Economics programme. In the 2024/25 academic year, the Economics team will comprise approximately 10 academic staff, working in a range of fields, including behavioural economics, institutional economics, growth economics, food economics, economic development and monetary policy.

The Faculty of Social Sciences will have approximately 60 academic staff, including academics in Business and Project Management, Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Design & Communication Studies.

Person Specification Criteria

Qualifications

Masters degree, or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area. (essential)
A teaching qualification (FHEA or equivalent). (desirable)

Key Criteria

  • Demonstrates, through evidence, excellent ability so as to be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in the role as advertised with regards to teaching.
  • Teaching competency in Principles of Microeconomics to at least Level 4 (1st year undergraduate).
  • Teaching competency in Economic History to at least Level 5 (2nd year undergraduate).
  • Flexibility and capacity to teach across a wide range of courses, where appropriate in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines, for example Business, Mathematics, Psychology, or Academic Writing.
  • Ability to develop excellent educational provision in areas with significant appeal to students.
  • Willingness and capacity to undertake continuous professional development related to the use of technology, software, and data in Economics.
  • Ability to engage and develop working relationships with external partners and with colleagues across diverse disciplines in Northeastern University London and across the NU Network.
