Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

Computer Science Teaching Position for Spring 2025 semester available at the University of Notre Dame (USA) in England.

The University of Notre Dame, a Catholic research university that ranks in the top 20 among American colleges and universities, operates an academic center in the heart of Westminster to promote intellectual exchange.

The University of Notre Dame’s London Undergraduate Program seeks an instructor able to teach one three-credit course in the spring semester, in subject areas such as:

Human Computer Interaction

An in-depth exploration of the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) including its history, goals, principles, methodologies, successes, failures, open problems, and emerging areas. Broad topics include theories of interaction (e.g., conceptual models, stages of execution, error analysis, constraints, memory by affordances), design methods (e.g., user-centered design, task analysis, prototyping tools), visual design principles (e.g., visual communication, digital typography, color, motion), evaluation techniques (e.g., heuristic evaluations, model-based evaluations), and emerging topics (e.g., affective computing, natural user interfaces, brain-computer interfaces).

Data Science

Data mining and machine learning techniques have been widely used in many domains. The focus of this course will primarily be on fundamental concepts and methods in data science, with relevant inclusions and references from probability, statistics, pattern recognition, databases, and information theory. The course will give students an opportunity to implement and experiment with some of the concepts (e.g., classification, clustering, frequent pattern mining), and also apply them to the real-world data sets.

We are open to alternative electives suitable for a Computer Science Student who has already taken core foundation courses. For additional information about the degree programs that these courses contribute to: https://cse.nd.edu/undergraduate/

The Human Computer Interaction or Data Science class would run in parallel with the same courses on campus. Collaboration with the faculty members teaching the parallel course will be expected, although instructors are expected to create their own learning materials.

Requirements: A Masters degree and university teaching experience in a relevant subject area are required for this position, PhD strongly preferred. Candidates must already have the right to work in the UK.

Time commitment: The class will meet for 14 teaching weeks, 150 mins per week, EITHER once per week, OR twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays, or on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, instructors are expected to offer office hours for their students, as well as setting and marking regular homework and assessment, class preparation, etc: a total time commitment of  approximately 0.2 FTE.

Dates for the Spring semester 2025: 13th January, to 2nd May (Easter break will be the bank holidays only) This post is conditional on the University of Notre Dame being able to run study abroad in London in Spring 2025.

The salary for this position will be commensurate with level of academic experience and the teaching load of each class, in the range of £7,650-£10,600 per class.
