Background
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Transformation of the Metals Industry (DigitalMetal) is a partnership of 5 Midlands universities: Leicester, Birmingham, Warwick; Nottingham, and Loughborough. It brings together leading researchers with a mandate to train future leaders in integration of data driven with physics-based models of products and production to transform the metals and manufacturing industry. It will equip a cohort of future leaders with enduring scientific knowledge, technical, digital and business skills to enable them to define, lead and deliver future innovation.
The School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham seeks to appoint a Teaching Fellow in Modelling Metals and Manufacturing until December 2027. The post holder will teach postgraduate research students, through allocated lectures and seminars, and industry aligned group research projects so that the requirements of the DigitalMetal Centre are met. The post holder may contribute to the design and running of modules with other colleagues, will plan and prepare teaching, undertake management/administration arising from teaching, and contribute to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.
Teaching is done within an established teaching programme (under the supervision of an academic member of staff). The post holder will also contribute to the enhancement of student experience and employability. This role is an excellent opportunity to be part of a vibrant department and research training partnership.
Main Duties
The successful candidate will convene modules in Intelligent Manufacturing Processes and Virtual and Smart Factories with a focus on metals processing. That includes giving seminars, monitoring discussion boards, all marking, and the creation of all teaching materials. They will also lead DigitalSynthesis group projects in partnership with flagship metals processing and manufacturing research centres to create digital twins of metals/alloys and processes for specific market sectors. Other duties will include the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate taught students’ dissertations and other tasks as deemed appropriate by the Head of Department.
