The Role

Bristol Film School at boomsatsuma is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to join our team of production and post production specialists. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching across undergraduate filmmaking courses, administer assessments and support day-to-day activities within the Film School – including course development, recruitment, student support and academic administration.

We welcome applications from candidates with a range of teaching experience and professional engagement with the film and television industry. The scope, compensation, and FTE contract for the role is dependent on appointment level and will be agreed as part of the hiring process.

About You

You will be a self-motivated individual who has the knowledge and confidence to teach across a range of undergraduate filmmaking modules, engaging with both industry-standard and experimental practices. Depending on your background, you may have worked in the film industry, have experience teaching on a higher education programme, or be an early career professional with a drive to support young creatives into film and television roles. In all cases, you will be adaptable, organised, and able to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people. An ability to learn new skills is also desirable, whether they be technical, artistic or pedagogical.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching and Curriculum Development: Support the planning, delivery, and continuous improvement of undergraduate filmmaking courses, ensuring an engaging and inclusive learning experience.
  • Assessment: Plan, support, and deliver fair and rigorous assessment of student work, ensuring evaluation methods effectively measure learning outcomes. Provide clear, constructive feedback to help students progress.
  • Student Support: Provide academic guidance and mentorship to students, supporting their creative and professional development. Offer pastoral support where appropriate and signpost students to additional resources and services as needed.
  • Other duties include contribution to academic administration, recruitment and outreach and professional engagement.

Personal Specification

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Filmmaking or a related field
  • A demonstrable ability to deliver tuition, training, and support to students at an undergraduate level to a high standard
  • A good working knowledge of film production and post-production concepts, conventions and workflows
  • Confident offline editing skills, including experience of crafting story during the edit and proficiency in video editing software
  • Good organisational and interpersonal skills, including timekeeping, task prioritisation, and collaborative working

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Experience teaching in higher education and/or relevant experience working in the creative industries
  • Practical knowledge of working with sound in the context of film production and post production
  • Demonstrable experience of quality assurance within Higher Education, such as assessment moderation, working with external examiners, and contributing to module and course development
