Applications are invited for an appointment as Lecturer in German at University of Galway. The appointment is tenable from September 1st, 2025.
The German discipline at University of Galway is a vibrant discipline with a strong commitment to engaged teaching and research. We are seeking an excellent academic who will play a key role in advancing our research portfolio. The appointee will contribute to the design, teaching and administration of language and culture modules on the Bachelor of Arts, BA Global Languages and associated programmes and to postgraduate teaching, coordination, administration and research supervision across the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
Colleagues in German at the University of Galway contribute to a wide range of courses in German language and cultural studies across several Colleges within the university (College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies, College of Business, Public Policy and Law, and College of Science and Engineering). Our research areas including innovative teaching methodologies, environmental humanities, GDR and post-GDR literature, memory and trauma studies, and colonial and post-colonial questions. The appointee must have a PhD in German and a strong research profile either in environmental studies/eco-criticism (ideally in the area of 19th century German Literature), thus supporting existing strengths in German and across the School or in at least one of these areas: machine translation and/or translation technologies; localization (web/video games), applied linguistics and/or sociolinguistics. The successful candidate will have native or near-native competence in German and in English.
The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers an MA in Translation Studies and an MA in International Contemporary Literatures and Media. The new appointment will, depending on their profile, advance one of these flagship programmes. The appointment will allow the discipline to contribute to the College Strategy on Internationalisation: Global Galway offers a multitude of opportunities, and this appointee will play a pivotal role in delivering intercultural and interlinguistic competences as part of the programme and vision. The appointment will contribute to German’s community partnership and engagement initiatives and to the College’s Signature Research Area Transnational Encounters and Global Legacies.
