Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities (Pre-Qin Dynasty Chinese History)

Applications are invited for a joint appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Digital Humanities (Pre-Qin Dynasty Chinese History), jointly at the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Arts (Ref.: 532039), to commence on August 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. 

Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS), established in 2001 at The University of Hong Kong, has a mission to promote innovative, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on China. The Institute seeks to provide a vibrant hub for studying the multi-facets of the Chinese civilization and its long developmental history using both new and traditional approaches. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in History (preferably pre-Qin dynasty history), quantitative history, digital history, or related fields. Preference will be given to candidates who also have experience of quantitative research using archaeological and/or historical data. The ideal applicant would be able to demonstrate the ability to work across disciplines, manage a research team, and drive forward new research initiatives. Expertise in or exposure to social science fields and their research methods is also a plus. Candidates with a strong publication record in reputable academic journals and/or with leading publishers are especially encouraged to apply.

The appointee is expected to excel in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching - in particular the ability to offer courses in digital humanities and digital technologies – and to contribute to curriculum development. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, HK salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will include a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
