Research Assistant/Research Associate* in Cardiovascular Epidemiology (BHF Scholarship)

Research 5: £32,546- £35,116

Research 7*: £37,174- £45,413

We are seeking a talented and motivated early-career researcher to join the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU), an internationally recognised collaborative research group on the causes and prevention of cardiovascular disease. The CEU, directed by Professor John Danesh, is part of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care (DPHPC), one of Europe’s leading academic departments of population health sciences.

As part of a funding grant from the British Heart Foundation (BHF), we have funding available for an interim period of 15 months to support an outstanding early-career researcher with relevant experience of conducting epidemiologic research and commitment to advance career in cardiovascular research. The postholder will need to be able to work independently as well as in active collaboration with other researchers in CEU.

You will undertake cutting-edge research to address questions within the remit of the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit, with a key focus on cardiovascular research. You are expected to play a significant role in the implementation of CEU’s current research agenda in one of the following areas:

  • Aetiology of cardiovascular disease (CVD): identifying causal pathways for CVDs in order to advance understanding of aetiology and link to therapeutic target prioritization efforts.
  • Therapeutic target prioritization: prioritizing potential therapeutic targets for CVDs to help reduce unsustainable high failures rates of costly late-stage trials.
  • Translational epidemiology: improve CVD prevention and management in the UK and globally by developing and evaluating risk assessment tools, strategies and interventions.

You will be expected to lead and collaborate in the writing of impactful publications.

Due to funding conditions for this post, we are looking for a candidate who is new to the University of Cambridge, and who has previously not been involved in cardiovascular research. Internal applicants may only be considered if they are moving into cardiovascular research from a different discipline.

You will need to have a plan beyond the interim scholarship to continue in cardiovascular research and pursue independent research funding.

The CEU is committed to supporting hybrid working for all staff, but staff are expected to work at the HLRI on a regular basis to help build our fantastic community and to aid integration.

Note that after the University has identified the preferred candidate, the appointment is subject to approval from both the University of Cambridge and BHF.

Funding for this post is 15 months from commencement in post.  This post is full time.  Part-time applications for no less than 80% FTE will be considered.

As a group, we value and encourage applications from a diversity of background and experience to contribute to the highly interdisciplinary research programme. We strongly value and encourage Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as well as a flexible working environment.

We offer an excellent employment package that includes:

  • Pension schemes
  • Hybrid working
  • Family-friendly initiatives
  • Career development opportunities
  • Support for health & mental wellbeing
  • Generous holiday entitlement

*Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD. Where a PhD has yet to be, awarded appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded.

Closing date: 1 June 2025
