Pembroke College wishes to appoint a part-time College Lecturer in Japanese, for one year, from 1 October 2025, with the potential to extend for a further year.
We welcome applicants with expertise in Modern Japanese Literature. We have an active Japanese community in Pembroke. You will work alongside a number of academics and researchers in the College.
All of our teaching consists of small group tutorials. We expect you mainly to teach tutorials in Modern Japanese Literature and text translation.
The course handbook gives you a useful introduction to the course at Oxford.
The postholder will be required to provide teaching for an average of five hours’ contact time per week during the eight weeks of Oxford’s three terms. You will be expected to set and mark college exams and participate in undergraduate admissions. You will also take on some administrative and pastoral responsibilities, including organising teaching and helping students to adjust to the course in their first term at Oxford.
This is a fixed term career development post, intended to give an early career academic the opportunity to develop skills in teaching and administration. College lectureships of this type are not intended as full-time posts and will often be most suitable for doctoral students in the final stages of their degree or postdocs holding other posts who are seeking additional teaching experience.
The salary will be in the range of £13,807 - £15,257 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. You will have a teaching allowance of £1,067.08 per annum, use of a room for teaching, and you will also be able to take some lunches and dinners free of charge in College throughout the year. All salary figures are 2024-25 rates and are subject to annual uplift.
The Further Particulars for this post are available by clicking the 'Apply' button above.
Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae and covering letter electronically to the Academic HR Administrator (academichr@pmb.ox.ac.uk) by 9am (BST) on Monday, 9 June 2025. Please send us the names and contact details of two referees who may be contacted if you are invited to interview. Interviews are planned to be held in mid-June.
Pembroke College is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome diversity amongst our staff and students and all reasonable adjustments will be made to the recruitment process, working arrangements and/or environment to accommodate applicants with any form of disability.
