Postdoctoral Research Scientist

The Role:
Are you driven to explore the biology behind cell survival and decision-making? Join the Klemm Group in a Wellcome Trust-funded project investigating how organelle communication shapes cellular health, stress responses, and fate decisions. This collaborative research focuses on membrane contact sites and the role of mitochondria in interacting with lipid droplets, the ER, lysosomes, and peroxisomes.

You’ll use advanced techniques such as confocal microscopy, live-cell imaging, immunofluorescence, proteomics, and image-based analysis. There’s also potential to expand into computational biology and data-driven modeling, depending on your interests. You’ll collaborate with departments across the South Parks Science Campus, including Biochemistry, the Kavli Institute, and the Dunn School of Pathology.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage your own research and administrative tasks.
• Develop and adapt scientific techniques and protocols.
• Analyse data, test hypotheses, and refine research approaches.
• Contribute to new project ideas and funding proposals.
• Prepare scientific reports, journal articles, and presentations.
• Use specialist lab equipment and advise colleagues on techniques.
• Represent the group at seminars and collaborate with partner institutions.

Selection Criteria:

Essential:

• DPhil/PhD (or near completion) in life sciences.
• Experience with confocal microscopy, immunofluorescence, live-cell imaging, and cellular biochemistry.
• Strong knowledge of cell biology (e.g., organelles, metabolism, stem cell differentiation).
• Motivation to apply computational methods in cell analysis.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to conduct high-quality experiments and collaborate effectively.

Desirable:

• Skills in computational biology and automated image analysis.
• Experience with single-cell modeling or lipid-protein simulations.
• Expertise in lipid biology, mitochondrial biology, cell stress, or related areas.
