About the role

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be based in the Department of Law at Northumbria University (Newcastle, UK), working under the supervision of Dr Lyndsey Bengtsson. This post is created as part of the Working with Dementia Network Plus funded by ESRC, NIHR and the Alzheimer’s Society. Involving a cross-faculty team from Northumbria University and led by the University of the West of Scotland, the aim of this network is to shift current understanding of working with dementia and to enhance work experiences for those affected by dementia to help to address the wider social and financial inequalities of dementia in society. 

The Post Doctoral Research Fellow will conduct both qualitative and quantitative analyses of relevant judgments. The successful applicant will be a key member of the Network team, which includes academics from the Schools of Business and Law at Northumbria University, as well as colleagues from University of the West of Scotland, University of Warwick, Lancaster University, Edinburgh Napier University and Wilfred Laurier University (Canada). 

This role is for a one year fixed term duration, starting Summer 2025. 

Please note this role is part time, working at 0.5FTE.

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 therefore the successful candidate will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service check. 

About you

Applicants should hold a PhD in law or equivalent experience and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in law. Applicants will have experience in qualitative and doctrinal research and project management. Applicants should also have knowledge of content analysis and qualitative methods, along with excellent organisational, interpersonal, and IT skills.

Desirable attributes include experience with quantitative methods, NVivo and/or nominal group technique research methodologies. Involvement of people living with dementia is central to the Working With Dementia Network Plus. As such experience of working with people living with  dementia and knowledge of ethical considerations of working with people living with dementia is desirable.

The post holder will be based at Northumbria University’s Newcastle campus. Occasional travel (within and beyond the UK) may be required to engage with project partners, deliver presentations, disseminate research findings and visit collaborating universities participating in the project.
