Liverpool John Moores University - Humanities and Social Science

Location: Liverpool
Salary: £46,735 to £57,422 per annum.
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 19th May 2025
Closes: 15th June 2025

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The International Relations & Politics programme area sits within the People, Politics and Communication Department, part of the School of Humanities and Social Science. We are seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in International Relations & Politics.

Following the successful launch of our MA in International Relations in 2017, we introduced the BA (Hons) International Relations & Politics in 2019. As part of our strategic growth, we have now validated a new BA (Hons) Criminology and International Relations, beginning in 2025/26. This post offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a growing and ambitious subject area at LJMU.

We seek a colleague able to teach across our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and potentially to lead the MA in International Relations. You must have research and teaching expertise in international relations and politics.

The People, Politics and Communication department brings together International Relations & Politics, Media, Culture & Communication, and Sociology. Colleagues are members of the Liverpool Centre for Cultural, Social and Political Research (CSPR), and we would expect you to contribute to its work and to develop teaching that attracts students across the department.

The role also involves contributing to teaching at Foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels more broadly, as needed. You must hold a PhD in a relevant field and have appropriate undergraduate teaching experience.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and delivering high-quality teaching.
  • Contributing to programme development and academic leadership.
  • Producing impactful research and/or knowledge exchange.
  • Undertaking administrative roles as directed by the International Relations & Politics area leader, Head of People, Politics & Communication department, or Director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Matthew Alan Hill (m.a.hill@ljmu.ac.uk), International Relations & Politics Area Lead.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

LJMU is an equal opportunities employer and welcome applicants from all background and communities irrespective of age, transgender status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and religion or belief. All our appointments are made on merit.

Anticipated interview date: 14th - 15th July 2025.

Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
