About the role

The East Asia Section of the Bodleian Libraries is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced, self-motivated and creative individual to work as the Subject Librarian (Chinese and Korean Studies), supporting world class research and teaching in Chinese and Korean Studies for Social Sciences and the Humanities.

You will develop electronic and print collections in your area/s of responsibility, subject to budgetary constraint, and manage and maintain online research guides and channels of communication. You will liaise with and provide research support (provision of advice, assistance and training) for the students and staff in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the School of Global and Area Studies, promote information and digital literacies, and develop, manage and interpret the Library’s Chinese and Korean Studies collections.

You will have day-to-day oversight of the KB Chen China Centre Library, in liaison with the Head of the East Asia Section, and you will line-manage a small team in delivery of high-quality frontline services to the University and external readers.

This is a permanent, full-time post, working 37.5 hours per week.

Due to the nature of duties involved, the post doesn’t support remote or home working

About You

You will have excellent knowledge of Chinese language (written and spoken) and literature, ability to read classical Chinese, a working knowledge of Korean language and experience of print and electronic resources for the academic study of Chinese and Korean, with genuine enthusiasm for the discipline.

Practical experience of library work or other information support at a relevant level within an academic (or similar) environment is also essential.

You will have an in-depth understanding of researcher and student information needs, and of the activities, discourse, approaches and scholarly communication patterns in the relevant academic disciplines.
