Global Summer School (GSS) is a two-week residential programme for the highest achieving students aged 16 – 17 from around the world to get a taste of life at Imperial. We welcome over 500 students from more than 50 different nationalities each summer. Read more about the programme here. Applicants must be available for the entire duration of the programme, with priority given to those who can work during both sessions. 

Who are we looking for?

We are recruiting five GSS Pastoral Managers, who oversee the social and pastoral programme during evenings, weekends and breakfast. These roles are responsible for supervising the safeguarding of participants, managing the 50 pastoral mentors, staffing an on-call evening rota, and ensuring the smooth running and high quality of the social programme.

We are looking for GSS Pastoral Managers who are experienced working with children and/or young people and have previously worked in a supervisory position on large summer programmes or worked with large numbers of young people in education settings. You must have experience of implementing safeguarding decisions, be a confident communicator, flexible, and able to work in a fast-paced environment.

What you would be doing: 

  • Supervising pastoral mentors
  • Overseeing the GSS social programme during weekday evenings and weekends 
  • Managing dinner and breakfast ensuring dietary requirements are catered for and groups attend allocated sittings
  • Managing the pastoral wellbeing of participants and mentors during weekday evenings and weekends
  • Assisting the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and Programme Manager with safeguarding, risk assessment and poor behaviour procedures for participants and pastoral mentors, including taking initial statements and attending formal discussions
  • Following safeguarding guidelines and risk assessment policies to protect the visiting students
  • Reporting any incidents/concerns appropriately and follow up as requested by the DSL 
  • Representing Imperial to prospective applicants 
  • Monitoring the hours worked by pastoral mentors and managing the sign in and sign out process
  • Attending mandatory training and preparatory sessions
  • Undertaking other duties as directed by GSS staff

What we are looking for: 

  • Experience of managing a team
  • Experience of providing pastoral support to students
  • Experience of planning and leading social events and/or fieldtrips
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures and risk assessment processes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Adaptability and flexibility

Further Information  

This is a residential position which involves shift work and nighttime on-call duties, appropriate breaks and a mandatory unpaid day off will be provided. Core hours will be 94.5 throughout the two-week programme, including 8 hours per evening, 1.5 hours each morning and 8 hours each weekend day with shifts confirmed in advance. 

Applicants must meet deadlines for recruitment, payroll and DBS checks . You must read and understand safeguarding and risk assessment documents before training.

Pastoral Managers will be required to attend mandatory in-person training on 24 June and 29 July 2025, and mandatory paid preparatory sessions before the programme.
