The University of Buckingham stands out as one of the UK’s most innovative institutions. Renowned for its personalised, student-first approach, it is the only private university with a Royal Charter. Buckingham pioneered the UK’s accelerated two-year degree and was the first to introduce a 4.5-year undergraduate medical degree, providing a faster route to qualification without compromising quality. With exceptional support through small-group academic tutorials and dedicated pastoral care, the University offers an inspiring environment where students and staff alike can achieve excellence, whilst championing independent spirit and academic freedom.
Overview:
Approaching the 10th anniversary of a well reputed and successful faculty, as Executive Dean of FMHS, you will provide leadership during a critical period of growth and opportunity, helping to enhance the faculty’s academic reputation, enrich student experiences, and drive strategic priorities. A key focus will be revitalising recruitment strategies to attract top-tier candidates for undergraduate Medicine and postgraduate taught programmes, fostering sustained growth and ensuring strong demand and accessibility for programmes within the UK and globally.
You will play a pivotal role in enhancing NSS outcomes for the medical school and contribute to the development of the university’s new School of Dentistry. By fostering a positive and collaborative culture, you will support staff in navigating a period of change with confidence. Reporting to the Provost, you will be a strategic and experienced leader with the dual ability to drive operational excellence and uphold the faculty’s position as a pioneer within healthcare education.
Essential Criteria:
You must have substantial experience in senior academic leadership roles within medicine, clinical, or healthcare-related disciplines, e.g., at Dean or Executive Dean level. Crucially, you will bring expertise in faculty leadership, academic development and improving student experience and recruitment, alongside a sound understanding of the healthcare education landscape. Professorial-level recognition in a relevant discipline is desirable, whilst effective resource management, and the ability to inspire and lead teams is key.
Medical School
Building on the ethos of putting the student first and above all else, the University of Buckingham Medical School is small enough for the students to be part of a coherent and supportive community and large enough to provide all the experience needed to become medical practitioners.
The condensed 4.5-year MB ChB programme is derived from a well-established curriculum. Its every aspect is engineered to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become professional and ethical doctors.
The University of Buckingham Medical School received General Medical Council (GMC) accreditation in May 2019. The GMC commended the University for its “excellent professional, academic and pastoral support that extends throughout the University and clinical learning environments” and “the robust systems that ensure the quality of all aspects of the MB ChB programme, including teaching and assessment.” The University has developed a number of geographically dispersed and culturally diverse partnerships. These collaborative arrangements are recognised as valuable opportunities for students to access higher education and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for the modern workplace.
