Background

The Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) will work together with our industrial partners to seek an innovative AI-enhanced sensing solution for structural heatlth monitoring. The Associate will develop machine learning algorithms for detecting events of interest and their classification thus to avoid emergencies, prioritize repair and maintenance and plan better for the future. The PDRA will be based at the Optical Fibre Research Group and this appointment is for 12 months (with potential for extension) and available from 1 May 2025.

Responsibilities

The main responsibility of the PDRA is to integrate the state-of-the-art sensing based on optical fibres with AI technologies. The PDRA is required to design machine learning algorithms, based on the data obtained from FBG sensors installed in key infrastructures. These data-driven models are subsequently evaluated and optimized by working closely with industrial partners. The expected outcome of the project is to demonstrate the potential for providing early warning for structural failures, based on real-time monitoring.

Person Specification

The successful candidate is required to have expertise in data science/sensing and photonics and an ability to work closely with and report to industries involved, coordinating with academic and industrial partners. 

The candidate is required to have a completed PhD in Photonics, Optical Sensors, Computer Science, Data Science or a related subject. Having prior experience of working with industry or tackling industry-focused problems with data analytics/software development is highly desirable.
