Overall purpose

The Health Laboratory Technician will support the effective delivery of health related modules by providing technical assistance, managing equipment logistics, and ensuring safe, high-quality practical learning experiences for students. Although a formal laboratory is not used, the role is central to supporting classroom based practical work and OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) sessions through the preparation and setup of specialist equipment across all five delivery sites.

Specific duties and responsibilities

Technical and Operational Support

  • Prepare, transport, and set up specialist equipment (e.g., sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, anatomical models) required for teaching sessions.
  • Provide on site support for OSCE practical, ensuring correct layout, functioning equipment, and adherence to scenario requirements.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to ensure all practical components of HSO4007 – Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Social Care are delivered effectively and consistently across all campuses.
  • Support with distribution of Visible body software codes to students and staff

Equipment and Inventory Management

  • Maintain an up to date inventory of teaching and assessment equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned, stored, and maintained in line with health and safety standards.
  • Liaise with suppliers or estates/IT services for the repair, calibration, or replacement of damaged or faulty equipment.

Health and Safety

  • Conduct risk assessments for practical activities and ensure compliance with relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Train staff and students in the safe use of health elated teaching equipment
  • Monitor and report any incidents, maintaining accurate records of equipment usage and safety checks.

Teaching and Assessment Support

  • Support academic staff during delivery of classroom-based practical activities and OSCEs.
  • Assist in designing and testing equipment setups for new teaching scenarios or simulations.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of practical session protocols and guidance materials.

Administrative and Logistical Coordination

  • Maintain detailed records of equipment use across the five sites.
  • Coordinate equipment scheduling and transport to ensure timely delivery and collection for each session.
  • Assist the programme and module leader in documentation preparation for reviews, and quality assurance processes.

Quality Assurance

The post holder will

  • Ensure that equipment and devices practices align with institutional and programme quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, calibration, and maintenance to support audits and compliance checks.
  • Contribute to the preparation of documentation required for accreditation, validation, or quality reviews.
