Overall purpose

The Psychology Laboratory Technician will provide technical and operational support to ensure the effective functioning of the psychology laboratory. The role involves managing laboratory resources, supporting staff and students with practical sessions, and maintaining health and safety standards. The Technician will play a pivotal role in ensuring an excellent academic experience for students through the provision of high quality laboratory services.

Specific duties and responsibilities

Laboratory Management

The key responsibilities of a lab technician are to:

  • Manage the day to day operations of the psychology laboratory, ensuring it is well maintained, organised, and functional.
  • Maintain and update an inventory of equipment and software, ensuring timely purchasing and replacements.
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is serviced and in good working order, consulting with suppliers for repairs or upgrades as needed.

Technical Support

The post holder will:

  • Provide technical assistance to staff and students during laboratory sessions, including setting up and operating specialised psychology equipment such as EEG, eye trackers, and psychophysiological tools.
  • Support students and staff in the use of data analysis and research software, such as SPSS, R, and Qualtrics.
  • Assist with the preparation and troubleshooting of experiments and research projects, including online and in lab data collection.

Health and Safety

The post holder will:

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in all laboratory operations.
  • Conduct risk assessments for practical activities and experiments, providing training to users on safe laboratory practices and equipment use.
  • Maintain health and safety records and report any incidents to the Programme Leader.

Teaching and Research Support

The post holder will:

  • Collaborate with academic staff to support the delivery of laboratory based teaching activities/practical’s ensuring all necessary materials and equipment are ready.
  • Assist students with the technical aspects of their research projects and dissertations.
  • Contribute to the development of teaching materials and laboratory protocols.

Administrative Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Maintain accurate records of laboratory usage, equipment loans, and consumables.
  • Support the Programme Leader in planning and scheduling laboratory based activities/practicals.
  • Assist in the preparation of documentation required for programme validation and accreditation processes.

Quality Assurance

The post holder will:

  • Ensure that laboratory practices align with institutional and programme quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, calibration, and maintenance to support audits and compliance checks.
  • Contribute to the preparation of documentation required for accreditation, validation, or quality reviews.
  • Regularly review and update laboratory protocols to meet evolving academic and safety standards.
