The Village Shop, at Queen Mary University of London, is our one-stop shop offering a great selection of leading brands for our students, staff and members of the public. We sell food to go, groceries, fresh fruit and veg, toiletries, QMUL merchandise, and much more. We place a huge emphasis on outstanding customer service and satisfaction. We are continuously looking to improve and expand our offering to our customers here at QMUL, We are looking for someone who enjoys and excels at the customer-facing aspect of this role but is also looking to learn all there is about running a retail outlet. We would also enjoy the capacity to help make positive developments and changes. Sustainability and ethical awareness are paramount to what we do here at QMSU, therefore a key feature in all of our commercial outlets, which includes the Village Shop.

QMSU represents and supports 30,000+ students and around 4,500 staff who from the diverse and vibrant student body at QMUL. The Village Shop is based on our Mile End Campus, which is close to both Mile End and Stepney Green Underground Station. 

This role will help us strive to improve our offerings to both the student and staff market with a focus being predominantly on sales and customer satisfaction development. We are looking for someone who is capable of growing with us along this exciting journey. You should have excellent interpersonal skills and a keen eye for detail, as well as being committed to the values of the organisation, being a safe, friendly and student led democratic organisation. Applicants would also need to be able to act in an operational capacity on a day-to-day basis but should also be interested in gaining the skillset to be able to successfully run their own retail outlet in the future.

You should be an approachable leader who is committed to the values of the organisation, being a safe, friendly environment with the student experience at its core. This role’s hours would be predominantly Monday – Friday, a variety of different shifts, with the flexibility to adapt working hours as long as it also suits the needs of the business. Some weekend work would be required during exceptionally busy times and to understand the needs of the business. The main place of work will be the Village shop as stated but there may be the need to cover shifts in the Union shop, as and when required.

Applicants should have excellent communication skills and have the ability to work with a wide range of people. Candidates must have the ability to work well under pressure, prioritise a varied workload and meet deadlines.

The post is a permanent post with a starting salary within the range £29,406 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, plus additional college closure days which include bank holidays and additional days over the Christmas period, defined benefits pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan and membership of the Sport and Fitness Centre.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
