About the role

As a Research Fellow in Laboratory and Computational Systems Biology Cancer Research, you will lead a cutting-edge interdisciplinary project integrating computational modelling and laboratory science to improve cancer treatment.

Building on breakthroughs in computational models to predict therapy response in lymphoma, this project extends those methods to other cancers. It also involves developing experimental biomarkers to support predictive models for clinical use. You will oversee this 3-year Future Leaders Fellowship-funded project, publish high-quality research, and present findings at national and international conferences.

The flexible nature of the funding allows you to shape the project based on promising results. You will also receive strong mentorship, training, and exposure to a range of experimental and computational methods to support your development as a future leader in research and innovation.

About you

You will hold (or be near completion of) a PhD in cancer biology, systems biology, cell biology, bioinformatics, or a related field. You will have experience generating scientific data, producing figures, and presenting your work in manuscripts and conferences. You will be quick to learn new experimental and computational techniques to adapt to emerging research directions.

You’ll be expected to conduct high-quality independent research, manage your workload effectively, and integrate experimental planning with computational work to drive iterative insights. You will be comfortable with molecular signalling pathways, understanding how these affect cancer cell fate and treatment response. Experience with computer coding is essential and knowledge of simulations relevant to these processes is helpful.

You must be an effective communicator, able to collaborate with laboratory and computational scientists, as well as non-scientific stakeholders. You’ll join the Sussex Blood Cancer Research group and benefit from the Sussex Cancer Research Centre, a collaborative network spanning the University of Sussex, University of Brighton, BSMS, and NHS trusts across Sussex (www.sussexcancer.org).
