The opportunity:

The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint an experienced and talented Engineering Workshops Manager to join its skilled Technical Services team of ca.35 staff. The post holder works closely with the Technical Services Manager, playing a leading role in delivery of a sustainable, effective and safe approach to the running of the School’s workshops.

This is a new role in the School created to provide management and leadership of the extensive and varied workshop facilities which support teaching, research and innovation activity across the School’s 4 engineering disciplines and 7 research institutes. The Engineering Workshops Manager will deliver a safe and efficient working environment across their area of responsibility, ensuring compliance with policies and legislation and optimising use of the available resource. They have line management responsibility for workshop staff across manufacturing, fabrication, welding, electrical and electronics work areas.

The School currently has 4 workshops: machine shop; welding; fabrication and electronics & electrical. Combined, the workshops support learning and teaching, and research and innovation. Equipment in the workshops includes: fibre laser cutter, hydraulic guillotine, CNC press brake, vertical panel saw, band saw, MIG and TIG plants, CNC plasma cutter, jigging tables, manual machines (lathes and mills), CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) machines, 3D printers, laser cutters, micro-TIG and handheld plasma cutter, soldering irons, power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal generators and bench-top digital multi-meters (DMMs). The successful candidate should demonstrate excellent H&S awareness and familiarity with H&S documentation (e.g., risk assessments, COSHH).

The role is customer-facing and the School is a diverse and international community of staff and students. The post holder will therefore have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong commitment to service delivery.

This role is full-time (35 hours per week), open-ended and available immediately. Part-time hours will be considered (21 minimum).

  • Significant experience in a range of engineering roles relevant to this post.
  • Demonstrated excellent organisational and planning skills.
  • Proven experience managing both staff and non-staff resources.
  • Sound knowledge of health & safety regulations and procedures in workshop environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
