This is an exciting time to join the University of Southampton. We have a global reputation for delivering world-class education, research and enterprise that makes a real impact on society’s biggest challenges. As a Teaching Fellow in Manufacturing and Materials you will play a vital role in supporting the research and education activities related to our Additive Materials and Structures Research Laboratory (AMSRL) facility. The AMSRL aims to provide the geometric freedom enabled by additive manufacturing (AM), together with the necessary knowledge and expertise to assess the
effects that changes in processing conditions will have on the material microstructure, properties, and performance of AM parts.

About you

First and foremost, you should have extensive experience with additive manufacturing techniques, the digital skills required to enable them, and the critical characterisation techniques to assess their outcomes. Experience of facilities and resource management will be important. You should also:

  • possess a doctorate or equivalent professional qualification with experience in manufacturing processes and materials characterisation.
  • be familiar with working in a laboratory based environment, and have a good understanding of relevant Health & Safety issues.
  • be able to work pro-actively with students and colleagues to solve problems, in particular experimental project work.
  • have the ability to communicate new and complex information effectively, both verbally and in writing, engaging the interest and enthusiasm of the target audience.
  • be able to organise your own activities and prioritise work to meet deadlines and quality standards.

Specific knowledge of additive manufacturing, mechanical characterisation, full-field experimental mechanics, volumetric imaging (e.g. X-ray computed tomography), engineering design, and computer-aided engineering tools (design and simulation) are desirable, as is a teaching qualification or membership of the Higher Education Academy.

What we can offer you

We are an ambitious, mutually supportive academic community that is passionate about creating an environment where everyone can achieve their full potential in education, research and enterprise. As such, we hold a School Athena SWAN bronze award. We value diversity and equality and recognise that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness. We offer a generous holiday allowance and additional University closure days, subsidised health and fitness facilities and access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

Apply by uploading your CV and a cover letter detailing how your skills and experience match the requirements of the role.
