About the Role
We wish to appoint an Environmental and Analytical Facility Technician, to join the School of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (SBBS), which carries out excellent education, research and public engagement activities, with support from 26 administrative staff and more than 30 technical staff.
The post is part of the Technical Services career family at Queen Mary University of London, which supports functions across multiple sites and provides the infrastructure and support for all our research, teaching and learning activities.
The purpose of this role is the operation and maintenance of the environmental analytical facility instrumentation and field research including among others, an Agilent 8890 ECD & FID Analyzer, Thermo Delta V Plus & Sercon Integra 2 isotope ratio mass spectrometers, Skalar San wet chemistry analyser, and Agilent 1200 HPLC.
Additionally, the post holder will provide general lab management support in the Biology Department, as directed by the Biology Department Lab Manager, e.g. H&S and equipment inductions and recordkeeping for new members of staff and students, aquarium maintenance, chemical inventories, disposal of waste and housekeeping.
About You
To be considered for this role you will have considerable understanding and technical experience of working in a research laboratory environment supporting the research process/researchers and more specifically, in maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting environmental analytical laboratory equipment, and support field work.
Additionally, it is required that you have experience in environmental sample preparation and analysis and data processing using e.g. isotope ratio mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, HPLC, wet chemistry analyser.
Moreover, the role requires very good understanding of Health and Safety legislation in environmental analytical laboratory with special risks, e.g. gases, radiation.
Due to the nature of work involved, the operational core requirements of this role can only be met effectively when working on campus. This role is therefore exempt from a regular pattern of Hybrid working. Remote working may be considered where the task undertaken permits and where there is sufficient cover on campus to fulfil service needs. The post is fixed term for 18-months.
