The role

We are looking to appoint two External Examiners for the Higher Rights of Audience Criminal and Civil qualification (one criminal External Examiner and one civil External Examiner).

From 1 October 2025, the Higher Rights of Audience criminal and civil qualification will be delivered by The University of Law as the sole assessment provider.  These roles will assure and maintain assessment standards for the Higher Rights of Audience criminal and civil qualification on behalf of the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

What we are looking for

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are occupationally competent in relation to the work undertaken in civil and criminal advocacy preferably in the higher courts
  • Have occupational and teaching or assessment experience in relation to the work undertaken in civil and criminal advocacy
  • Can commit time to conduct the role well. This may include travel to meetings, events, visiting the assessment organisation and the SRA
  • Have experience of evaluation of assessments and writing evaluation reports.
  • Have strong analytical skills
  • Can communicate clearly and accurately, both in writing and orally
  • Have a strong commitment to equality and diversity and the delivery of fair assessments.

Useful information

The successful applicant will start from 1 September 2025.

The commitment is likely to be between 10 – 15 days per year. Some of the work can be done remotely but Examiners will also be asked to travel to observe assessment and attend examination boards.

The work will be remunerated at a day rate of £400 gross per day, plus reasonable travelling expenses.

The successful candidates will be engaged via a contract for services.

  • May not directly or indirectly organise, run, participate or otherwise be involved in any training or preparatory courses or assessments for the Higher Rights of Audience criminal and civil qualification for the duration of their term of appointment
  • Will keep all information about the Higher Rights of Audience criminal and civil assessments confidential.

The closing date for applications is Monday 23 June 2025 at 9 am. Assessment and interviews are scheduled to take place during week commencing 7 July 2025 and week commencing 14 July 2025. Interviews will be conducted remotely using Microsoft Teams.
