We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the Integral Membrane Proteins group led by David Sauer. You will study the structure and function of human membrane proteins as antiviral targets, at the Centre for Medicines Discovery, Nuffield Department of Medicine.
You will be responsible for running and managing a set of projects involving integral membrane proteins, with an emphasis on structure and function studies, as agreed with your line manager in the CMD, and you will express and purify membrane proteins for structural, biophysical, and biochemical studies. Other duties will include maintaining cells and performing large-scale grow-ups of insect cell and mammalian cell cultures for purification, and for developing and performing biophysical and functional assays to identify substrates, activators, and inhibitors. You will solve structures of these proteins using cryo-electron microscopy. Structures may include complexes with small molecule inhibitors, activators, substrates or protein/nanobody or antibody binders.
It is essential that you hold a PhD/DPhil (or close or completion) in a relevant area of structural biology, biophysics, or biochemistry. You will have a proven academic and/or industrial experience in biochemistry, biophysics, functional screening, or structural biology studies of integral membrane proteins. Strong molecular biology skills, including site-directed mutagenesis and preparation of plasmids and baculovirus, and experience with performing in vitro biophysical and biochemical assays of membrane proteins are highly desirable for this role.
Applications for this vacancy should be made online and you will need to upload a supporting statement and CV. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. Please restrict your documentation to your CV and supporting statement only. Any other documents will be requested at a later date.
This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract until 30 April 2027 and is funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Only applications received before 12 midday on 1 July 2025 will be considered. Please quote 179910 on all correspondence.
