Technical Specialist - Mass Spectrometry

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Core Facility Technical Team at Manchester Metropolitan University as a Mass Spectrometry Technical Specialist. About the Role:

As a Technical Specialist, you will:

  • Work independently in your mass spectrometry specialist area, taking responsibility for a designated workspace and the provision of an excellent service.
  • Promote the specialism internally and externally to ensure wide exposure leading to utilisation and engage in collaborative projects.
  • Work with stakeholders to develop new methods to support research projects.
  • Be responsible for the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of specialist equipment in your area.
  • Devise innovative solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Train service users in the use of specialist equipment and software.

About you:

To succeed in this role, you will possess:

  • Significant knowledge in the fundamental principles and theory of mass spectrometers.
  • Extensive experience in operating and maintenance of a wide range of mass spectrometers (e.g. LC-MS, GC-MS, tandem and high-resolution instrumentation) and ancillary equipment.
  • Experience of developing new methods and quality control.
  • Ability to use software relating to mass spectrometry e.g. MassHunter, MassLynx etc.

  • Ability to collect, organise and synthesise complex data from different sources.
  • Be customer focussed with excellent communication skills.
  • Flexible, collaborative, and committed to inclusive research practices.
  • Be pro-active, motivated, resourceful and able to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to effectively manage time whilst keeping to a schedule of work and be organised in documenting progress.

You will be part of a large and diverse Technical Team that manages and supports our state-of-the-art equipment and facilities including our Analytical Core Facility, research and teaching laboratories, advanced digital and technical workshops, inspiring studio spaces and modern galleries that support and underpin our research and education strategies.
