Location: Liverpool
Salary: £33,482 to £45,413 pa
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 10th June 2025
Closes: 1st July 2025
Job Ref: 095035

We have an exciting opportunity for a postgraduate or postdoctoral Health Data Scientist / quantitative epidemiologist to join the University of Liverpool, working on the Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance in clinical infections from companion animals (VetCLIN AMR) project (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/infection-veterinary-and-ecological-sciences/research/vetclin-amr/ funded by the Veterinary Medicine Directorate.

Surveillance efforts in veterinary medicine have focused on food-producing animals and therefore, there is a greater availability of robust antimicrobial resistance (AMR) data in the food production sector. Although they are under-represented in current surveillance programmes, companion animals are an important feature of the One Health AMR landscape due to potential for inter-species transmission of antimicrobial resistant zoonotic pathogens. In this project we collaborate with private veterinary microbiology laboratories across the UK, to fill this gap in AMR surveillance in companion animals clinical infections. In addition, this project works towards harmonisation of methodologies used by diagnostic laboratories for bacterial culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and AMR screening. These are key aspects leading to harmonised and standardised AMR surveillance approaches and alignment of AMR surveillance in the UK with methodologies proposed by the newly formed European AMR Surveillance Network in veterinary medicine (EARS-Vet).

You will hold a Doctoral (or be near completion) or Master’s degree or equivalent experience (grade 7), or BSc (grade 6). You may have worked in a range of previous relevant domains including applied/medical statistics, health data sciences / informatics, computer science, quantitative epidemiology, or an animal related degree (such as veterinary science, veterinary nursing, bio veterinary science). You must also have a passion and demonstrable skills (advanced for postdoc) in R programming and be able to communicate results effectively in writing and verbally with colleagues regardless of their academic background. Regardless of your background, you must be able to demonstrate a clear interest in animal health and in the science we are doing.

The post is based at the Leahurst campus of University of Liverpool on the Wirral; some remote working may however be possible.

This is a full-time post (with some flexibility towards part-time at 0.8FTE), fixed-term contract for 2 months (1 August to 30 September 2025) with potential for extension until 31st March 2026.
