The research assistant will be a member of a team researching mechanisms underlying obesity and metabolic diseases. The laboratory uses mass spectrometry to identify and measure peptides and proteins, and investigate how these molecules are involved in energy metabolism and how they can affect the health of patients with metabolic diseases.
The group has three mass spectrometers which the applicant will aid in running. A ThermoFisher Q-Exactive Plus Orbitrap with an Ultimate 3000 LC system which is used for untargeted peptidomics and proteomics experiments. A SCIEX 7600 ZenoToF instrument running in nanoflow for untargeted peptidomics and proteomics analyses. This system is used to generate proteomics and peptidomics datasets that are searched with the PEAKS Bioinformatics software package, and the results interrogated using the Perseus program.
The third system is a Waters TQ-XS triple quadrupole with an M Class LC system. The instrument has a normal source interface, an IonKey source and a nano source to cater for various throughput and sensitivity requirements.
The appointee will receive training in developing quantitative LC-MS methodologies for peptides and proteins, as well as performing peptidomic and proteomics analyses in clinical and preclinical matrices.
