At the University of Reading, Digital Technology Services (DTS) underpins academic excellence through the delivery of robust, scalable, and forward-thinking digital services. Within DTS, our Digital Research Computing Team exists to empower researchers and academics with cutting-edge High Performance Computing (HPC), data management, and specialist technical consulting.

About the Role
As a Senior Research Computing Engineer, you’ll work closely with academics across a diverse range of disciplines, supporting their research computing needs. From designing and maintaining HPC solutions to advising on data-intensive research workflows and cloud-based analysis platforms, you’ll help shape the future of research at Reading.

This is a hands-on technical role where no two days are the same, expect to work on everything from research infrastructure design alongside our Operations team to consulting on software performance and data workflows. You’ll also play an active part in community engagement, knowledge sharing, and enabling digital innovation across the University.

About the Team
Our Digital Research Computing Team is a close-knit group of engineers and specialists who support local, central, and cloud-based research services. Working within the wider DTS Service Delivery function, we collaborate across teams to ensure the University’s research ambitions are fully supported by digital capability.

What You’ll Bring
We’re looking for someone with a solid technical foundation and a collaborative mindset. You might come from an academic, commercial, or research background, what matters most is your passion for enabling research through digital expertise.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong working knowledge of research computing applications (e.g. MATLAB, R, Python, or similar).
  • Proven experience supporting or working with High Performance Computing (HPC) systems.
  • A practical understanding of research data management principles and practices.
  • Solid experience with Linux system administration in a research or academic environment.
