Arcipel, a leading strategic advisory firm, is seeking a full-time post-doctoral associate in defence strategy and nuclear security for a one-year appointment with a view to extension.

The position is a research role for a post-doctoral candidate specialised in nuclear security, weapons of mass destruction proliferation, defence strategy, and deterrence. The successful candidate would be expected to lead and deliver significant research projects related to nuclear security and defence strategy. Prior experience working on defence issues and wargaming projects is preferred. In addition, the associate will be expected to support ad hoc projects in other subject areas and generate further funding on an ongoing basis.

About the role

The role offers a unique opportunity to work on matters of national security and defence, with substantive responsibility to develop, build, and execute large research projects that shape policy outcomes.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conducting policy-relevant research on nuclear doctrine, policy, deterrence and strategy, and managing a large project focused on nuclear deterrence strategy for the UK government.
  • Devising a programme of work on nuclear proliferation, policy, strategy and defence and engaging in fundraising to support that work over the longer term.
  • Supporting ad hoc research projects on a broader range of topics related to defence, security and strategy.
  • Designing and executing wargames and scenario exercises related to the research programme’s focus.
  • Contributing to a wider community of practice on defence and nuclear security issues, including participating in relevant events, delivering thought leadership, and bolstering media relations.

The role is a hybrid position, with at least two days per week expected to be in person. The post will start in September 2025 and will be offered on a full-time, fixed-term contract, initially for one year but with a view to an indefinite role.

About the candidate

The ideal candidate would be a post-doctoral researcher with expertise in nuclear strategy, policy and doctrine. A profound interest and passion for the subject matter is vital, as well as a flexible and entrepreneurial work ethic and advanced project management skills.

Key characteristics:

  • Relevant academic credentials, including a PhD in a related field (international relations, war studies or similar) and specialist knowledge of WMD proliferation, doctrine, policy and strategy
  • Exceptional analytical and research skills are required. Previous experience working on defence and security issues, and prior knowledge of wargaming is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Significant project management skills with prior experience leading large research projects is desirable.
  • The ability to communicate effectively to government stakeholders, private industry, and public audiences.
  • The ability to work independently and in a wider team equally as effectively.
  • Experience working in a policy-related field is desirable, as well as an understanding of project development and fundraising.
  • Right to work in the UK is essential.
