The Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, at Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, is seeking applications from candidates with relevant qualifications and experience for a full-time, two-year fixed-term Departmental Lectureship in Japanese Studies to commence on to start on 1st September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will lecture, tutor, supervise, examine, and handle course administration for postgraduate students as well as contribute to the wider intellectual life of the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies. They will also be expected to to conduct independent research.

About the Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to lecture and teach graduate students, and contribute to teaching, research, and academic administration, as well as to engage in advanced study and academic research.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the MSc and MPhil in Japanese Studies teaching programme, including Research Methods, an Option course, and dissertation supervision.
  • Contribute to the Global and Area Studies programme, and/or the undergraduate Japanese Studies programme, as requested by the Director.
  • Be first contact for students in matters relating to attendance, conduct, coursework, performance,  and welfare (referring matters to appropriate others).
  • Engage in University examining and assessment.
  • Undertake advanced academic research to underpin lectures and class teaching.
  • Manage independent research projects or specific areas of research within a broad programme, to include: developing research questions within a specific context; conducting original research; analysing qualitative and/or quantitative data from a variety of sources, and developing appropriate analytical protocols and techniques to support research.

About You:

Applicants should have

  • A doctorate in an area related to Japanese Studies.
  • Proven ability and experience necessary to teach high-achieving and challenging graduate students, in a multi-disciplinary environment and to carry out student assessment, examination and course design.
  • The willingness and ability to supervise MSc and MPhil dissertations in Japanese Studies across a range of topics.
  • Strong publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field of Japanese Studies.
  • Fluency and ability to conduct primary research using the Japanese language.
