Are you an environmental geographer who is enthusiastic to share your knowledge about sustainability and climate change? We are seeking a Lecturer in Environmental Geography to play a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual future of our students.

Based within the School of Social Sciences, this is an exciting opportunity to be part of a bold and ambitious Geography subject group, situated at Birkbeck, University of London. 

As Lecturer in Environmental Geography, you will be teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate courses – with a particular focus on environmental science, environmental management, environmental policy and physical geography modules and field teaching in the BSc Environment and SustainabilityBSc GeographyMSc Environment and Sustainability and MSc Climate Change.

You will also contribute to shaping our exciting new curriculum and our vibrant research culture and environment, which includes the Birkbeck Research Centre for Environment and Sustainability.

As Lecturer you will:

  • Teach and inspire students across various settings, from small tutorials to large lectures, seminars, laboratories and field trips.
  • Develop and deliver engaging teaching materials and methods, and convene modules.
  • Supervise student projects and provide academic guidance.
  • Engage in research activities and contribute to the School's research objectives.
  • Participate in outreach and engagement activities.
  • Contribute to School administration and management.

The ideal candidate for the Lecturer role should have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in teaching and leading modules at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • A commitment to diversity and the ability to engage students from diverse backgrounds.

We would particularly welcome applicants with subject specialisms in environmental and physical geography who have experience of programme leadership, and who come from under-represented groups in academia.

This is a great opportunity to be part of a centre of excellence, situated at Birkbeck, in the heart of London’s historic Bloomsbury area. Birkbeck has been providing world-class training in geography since the late 1800s, and the School has an exciting range of expertise including human and physical geography, climate change, international development and geographic data science. 

Remuneration
£43,636 rising to £60,018 per annum. The salary is Grade LLEC on the College's London pay scale which includes a consolidated weighting / allowance, which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area.
