Postdoctoral Research Associate (Computational Mycobacteriology)

University of Oxford - NDM Experimental Medicine

Location: Oxford
Salary: £38,674 to £46,913 p.a. Grade 7
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 23rd June 2025
Closes: 4th July 2025
Job Ref: 180462

John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford

About the Role

We are seeking a forward-thinking interdisciplinary postdoctoral researcher to join the recently established Oxford Consortium on Drugs for Drug-resistant TB (OxCoD4TB). This consortium pulls together expertise from all over the University, including in diagnostics, data science, drug and vaccine design, preclinical testing and clinical testing and brings it to bear on tuberculosis (TB). The main aims of OxCoD4TB are to establish and validate a new TB therapeutics pipeline and discover and evaluate novel compounds and also drug and vaccine combinations.

Over the last ten years we have collated and curated the world’s largest publicly available dataset of M. tuberculosis samples with both genetic and drug susceptibility testing data. This data has many potential uses within OxCo4TB and e.g. be used to help choose drug candidates that are less likely to evolve resistance or assess if a candidate is likely to be equally effective in all geographical lineages. As we are at the beginning of the project, the post-holder will have the opportunity to help establish collaborations within Ox4CoTB and beyond and not only grow this crucial dataset but also use it in novel and exciting ways.

We are part of the larger Modernising Medical Microbiology (MMM) Unit which comprises approximately 40 researchers situated in Oxford, predominantly at the John Radcliffe Hospital. The group is taking a lead in infectious diseases research in the UK.

This post is full-time (part-time working will be considered, 0.8 FTE, 30 hours per week minimum) and is fixed term up to 28/02/2028.

About You

You will have a PhD in a relevant scientific discipline and sufficient specialist knowledge relevant to the project to be able to make a start on day one – we do not expect everyone to have all the skills and knowledge required for the post. You will have experience of writing scientific papers and presenting results and be able to manage your own research projects.

If you like the idea of working as part of an interdisciplinary team that is using large datasets to improve the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, including the development of new drugs, we’d love to hear from you.

Benefits of working

University employees enjoy 38 days’ paid holiday, generous pension schemes, travel discounts, and a variety of professional development opportunities. Our range of other employee benefits and discounts also includes free entry to the Botanic Gardens and University colleges, and discounts at University museums.
