SOAS University of London is the leading Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East. SOAS University of London is positioned to play a leading role in reimagining higher education globally, with a new strategic plan in place as the basis for the renewal and revitalisation of the School which commits SOAS to both student responsiveness and research intensity. SOAS is moving towards a new model of international partnerships which is responsive to the transnational character of our global challenges.
About the Role
The objective of the Fellowship is to provide a development opportunity for those who have exceptional potential in Economics academic career and research. During the two-year appointment, SOAS Associate Lecturers will have the opportunity to gain experience in teaching and learning activities, to develop their research and/or academic leadership and management skills and gain a teaching qualification. Associate Lecturers are expected to contribute to class teaching on the undergraduate degree programme and other teaching on the undergraduate or postgraduate programme as may be available. While our class teaching needs can arise in all core areas of the undergraduate curriculum, we particularly welcome applicants who can teach in the areas of economic theories (macro and microeconomic theories) and methods (mathematics, statistics and econometrics using R, Python and other open-source statistical computer software).
About the Department
The world and the discipline of economics needs a department like SOAS Economics more than ever before. The multiple challenges that the world is facing, such as the climate emergency, the health crisis and global inequalities, require rigorous economic approaches that are context-specific and rely on multi-disciplinary engagement and a Global South lens. Drawing on our rich tradition in political economy, development and heterodox economics, we have developed analytical tools and empirical methods that we can use to achieve our vision to reshape economics and to bring about fundamental change in economic policy making and practices around the world.
Associate Lecturers will contribute to seminar teachings in economic theories (macro and microeconomic theories) and methods (mathematics, statistics and econometrics using R, Python and other open-source statistical computer software) in one or more among the moules listed below. A longer list of the modules, while not exhaustive, for which you will be expected to teach seminar classes are listed in the job description.
About you
You should have a PhD in Economics or closely allied discipline, or be close to completing one, by the post start date. Relevant teaching experience including assessing courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level would be an advantage. You must be able to demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills and a capacity to foster an engaging and supportive learning environment for students. In addition, you will have a very good knowledge of economic theories (macro and microeconomic theories) and methods (mathematics, statistics and econometrics using R, Python & other open-source statistical computer software) with potential to develop this work further.
