The School of Computing at the University of Otago (Te Kura Rorohiko o Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka) offers a wide range of courses in the disciplines of Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, and Business Analytics.

Our teaching spans across all major aspects of international standard curricula and is delivered in the form of research-informed education. The School has demonstrated excellence in research and teaching with an emphasis on the development of student research skills. The ability to attract and supervise research students is critical for any applicant.

We are committed to working closely with iwi and Māori organisations, and mātauraka Māori has become an integral part of teaching and research across the institution. We especially value our relationship with Ngai Tahu, the mana whenua within their takiwā of Te Waipounamu, and the University's principal Treaty partner.

The Role / Te Mahi

Applications are invited for two Lecturer/Pūkenga positions in the School of Computing. In this role, successful candidates will contribute to the School's excellent teaching and learning culture and to our diverse, national and international research profile. (Note: Lecturer is equivalent to Assistant Professor in the North American system.)

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Contributing to the research activities of the Department, including publishing in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, obtaining external funding support, and supervising research students
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, including developing new course content and teaching materials, participating in collaborative teaching activities, contributing to bicultural curriculum development, and assessing student performance
  • Contributing to the effective and efficient administration of the School and its responsibilities within the University and wider community

While we have a need to increase our research and teaching capacity in HCI/Visual Computing, we will appoint outstanding candidates aligned with any of our teaching and research areas.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

  • Completed or nearly completed PhD with established research record in computing
  • Outstanding record of research and teaching or demonstrated potential for development
  • Commitment to rigour, ethics, and cultural safety in research and teaching as well as collegiality and respect for diversity
  • Commitment to upholding the University's core values related to support and success of Māori and Pacific students, aligned with the University's Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework
