About the Role
For informal enquiries, please contact Professor Matthew Clayton (Head of Department) m.g.clayton@warwick.ac.uk.
Applications are invited for an indefinite Assistant Professorship in International Relations: Conflict and Security in the Department of Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at the University of Warwick to start as soon as possible in the academic year 2025-26. The appointment will be made at FA7 of the University of Warwick salary scale.
We are interested in receiving applications from scholars with expertise in global security, geopolitics, defence policy, security governance, emerging security challenges related to new technologies, and the changing character of conflict and war regarding their causes, conduct, resolution and consequences. The position is open with respect to research focus, although an ability to teach modules designed to engage with questions of why the resort to military force continues to be a major facet of contemporary International Relations would be welcome. The Department currently has specialists in the international politics of the EU, China, Japan, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Nordic Region; US foreign and security policy; critical security studies, counter-terrorism studies; migration and border studies; conflict studies, intelligence; cybersecurity; critical Geopolitics; conflict resolution; and peacebuilding. Those with expertise in these or other areas of International Relations and International Security are welcome to apply. We particularly welcome applications from scholars with a research focus on countries or regions of the Global South.
The successful candidate will join one or more of PAIS’s research clusters: International Relations and Security, International Political Economy, Comparative Politics, Environmental Politics and Political Theory. We are a methodologically pluralist department and welcome all different approaches to the study of the politics and international studies.
About You
The successful candidate will have achieved national eminence and authority for the quality and impact of their research and scholarship, and will be developing an international profile. They will be expected to produce high-quality research outputs in leading journals and presses, to pursue competitive bids for external research funding, and to demonstrate a commitment to generating impact beyond the academy.
In addition, the post-holder will be expected to design and teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules related to the international relations, war, conflict, and security. You will also have the opportunity to help shape our curriculum by offering modules in your research specialism. Additionally, you will support the supervision of dissertations at UG and PGT levels.
You will demonstrate a track record of, or reflective engagement with, advancing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the workplace, including efforts to promote gender and racial equality. A demonstrable commitment to inclusive teaching practices—particularly in relation to supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds, including those with disabilities and the implementation of reasonable adjustments—is essential. Experience with decolonising the curriculum and anti-racist, intersectional, or other critical pedagogical approaches is highly desirable.
