The opportunity
Are you a skilled digital maker ready for a new challenge in a creative, future-focused environment? At the UAL Creative Computing Institute (CCI), we’re looking for a Digital Fabrication Specialist Technician to take the lead in developing and running our state-of-the-art fabrication lab.
This is a hands-on, senior technical role where you’ll manage the daily operations of the lab, from maintaining equipment and materials to ensuring a safe and productive space for students, staff and researchers. You'll have a key role in shaping the lab’s future direction, advising on new tools, technologies and workshop development, with your own budgets and a high level of autonomy.
Alongside your technical responsibilities, you’ll support teaching and learning by delivering inductions, technical tutorials, and one-to-one sessions. You’ll work closely with students as they explore creative projects, helping them develop skills in areas such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, vinyl cutting and digital modelling. Your expertise will ensure the lab is not only operational but inspiring.
This is more than just a support role, it’s an opportunity to be part of a vibrant, collaborative academic community where technicians are valued as educators and mentors. You’ll play a vital role in preparing students for the real world through hands-on learning and technical insight.
About you
You’ll be a confident and motivated technician with a strong background in digital fabrication and a genuine passion for making. You will have experience working with a range of digital tools, machines and software, including FDM and SLA 3D printers, CO₂ laser cutters, vinyl cutters, Blender, Illustrator and Fusion 360.
You’re comfortable setting up, maintaining and troubleshooting machines, and experienced in managing health and safety in a workshop environment. You’ll hold formal qualifications in risk assessment and COSHH (e.g. IOSH or NEBOSH) and be ready to take ownership of both the technical space and the student experience.
